Professor Peter Baker

Head of Rural Clinical School

The Rural Clinical School (RCS) was established on 1st January, 2002. We are part of a national network of Rural Clinical Schools managed by Universities and funded by the Australian Government, through the Department of Health and Ageing, to improve the rural medical workforce.

Our focus is to provide high quality medical education and training experiences for students in rural and regional areas. The premise is that medical students who have a positive living and learning experience in a rural or regional setting will be encouraged to take up rural practice, thus enhancing the sustainability and viability of rural health care services.

Our Campuses

Our teaching sites feature learning resources and facilities that support and facilitate face-to-face, bedside and online learning. Our main teaching sites are located at:

Bundaberg
Hervey Bay
Rockhampton
Toowoomba

Clinical Education

Our teaching program provides a multidisciplinary hands-on approach to medical education emphasising community based learning and inter-professional collaboration across a wide range of health professionals. Teaching is delivered by a variety of health providers, including Queensland Health, private hospitals, general practitioners, specialist consultants and other health professionals.

This range of settings exposes students to an array of medical conditions and provides a clear and comprehensive understanding of health care in a rural/regional centre.

Research

The Rural Clinical School Research Centre (RCSRC) is a newly established centre whose main objective is to undertake and facilitate medical and health related research specific to regional, rural and remote areas ranging from individual to national or international issues.
In view of the importance of quality clinical training experiences in encouraging graduates to pursue a rural medical career, medical education and medical workforce will continue to form a major component of our research. Collaborative research projects and initiatives will continue to be a key focus of the RCSRC, which currently range from within the School of Medicine to local communities, state, national and international organisations.

The RCS also conducts research through an active collaboration with the University of Southern Queensland. The jointly badged research facility – the Centre for Rural and Remote Area Health – provides the focus for research in the areas of:

  • Inter Professional Education
  • Recruitment and Retention of the Rural Health Care Workforce
  • Resilience of Rural Communities
