A career in medicine can take many directions. Beyond established career tracks in clinical medicine, graduates from this, and other, medical schools pursue varied careers in health care (e.g. occupational medicine, corporate health maintenance), medical education, and biomedical research. The School of Medicine recognizes the importance of providing medical students with the opportunity to prepare themselves for diverse potential careers.
One avenue available in the medical course is the provision for students to undertake combined MBBS and PhD (or MPhil) training. Programs of this kind are well established, particularly in the USA, and provide graduates with the opportunity to combine clinical medicine with training in the basic, clinical or social sciences. Importantly, while one central aim of this combined program is to prepare graduates for a career in academic medicine, in the international experience such combined degrees have successfully prepared graduates for the whole gamut of career possibilities.
