UQ Medical Students taking up the challenge of Global Health

What started as fundraising as a gesture of thanks from UQ Medical Students to their doctor counterparts for training and accommodating them free of charge over their 2007 medical elective in a Mission Hospital in the Northern Indian town of Manali, has rapidly snowballed into a fully fledged medical aid project.

With over AUD $27,000 raised over its first two years, the project has received generous contributions from Australia and abroad including Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands, the UK, Spain, the US, India and New Zealand.

What does the Project do?

The Problem

Health care in India is not free: there is neither provision of care for the poor, nor a nationalised insurance scheme. Government hospitals often find themselves lacking basic amenities, limiting the scope of the health care they can deliver. In this scenario the Lady Willingdon Hosptial provides health care to all, irrespective of economic or other background. In doing so, the hospital has little resources for further development or renewal of old equipment. They are thus dependant on donations for the majority of capital expenses.

Our Solution, The Project

The rapidly expanding Manali Medical Aid Project aims to pair the urgent medical and community needs of the hospital team with the passions and interests of local and international sponsors. The project utilises UQ medical students as ambassadors directly taking part in funded initiatives during their medical elective in Manali and, upon return, reporting back to sponsors and the local community. This ensures that the money raised by the MMAP is spent on sub-projects in accordance with donors’ wishes.

This student-run project is not-for-profit, and all donations through us are passed in their entirety to the hospital. All administrative costs incurred are paid for by the students running the project. As a fully-transparent project, all information regarding the expenditure of donations is published at the conclusion of each year.

What You Can Do

Aid us in our quest to support the health of the communities which rely on Lady Willingdon Hospital. Read more about us on our website at: www.manalimedicalaid.org. Then have a look at how you can contribute. Any support is always welcome and appreciated. Each dollar we raise goes a long way in India - don't underestimate the impact you can make!

Time Travellers

TIME We are not alone! The UQ student global health club, TIME (Towards International Medical Equality) co-ordinates a number of other Medical Aid Projects, such as to Gizo Hospital in the Solomon Islands by way of gathering medical supplies for individual students who travel on electives to distribute at their destination.
