UNMDG Pre-Elective Workshop Skills for MBBS 1 (relevant for ANY clinical destination)
Proudly coordinated by: SWIM, TIME, TROHPIQ, UQMS & the UNMDG Project...
... in Partnership with the School of Medicine and with the support of the School of Population Health.
The inaugural MBBS 1 Pre-Elective Workshop, held on Saturday 6th September at the University of Queensland Mayne Medical School, was an outstanding success.
The Workshop offered students guidance in clinical skills that are relevant for ANY clinical destination (whether at the Royal Brisbane Hospital or in a remote community).
The UNMDG Pre-Electives Workshop is an example of the opportunities we have for people to get involved LOCALLY, practise their skills and learn more about the key challenges of global health. Importantly, participants are encouraged to consider the relevance of these skills in various contexts.
The Workshop addressed the United Nations Millennium Development Goals by a relevant focus on health care and prevention in developing communities. The importance of teaching these basic and transferable skills was demonstrated, especially in communities where access to health care facilities may be limited.
Lead by expert clinicians, participating students were offered basic hands-on training in:
MDG 3. Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women
MDG 4. Reduce Child Mortality
MDG 5. Improve Maternal Health
MDG 4. Reduce Child Mortality
MDG 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases

Through the organising committee run by the four key student groups of UQ medicine: SWIM, TIME, TROHPIQ and the UQMS. Many thanks to over 50 clinicians, students and other staff who contributed to a very successful day.
All 120 Workshop spaces filled up within 2 hours of advertising it! Unfortunately, due to logistical constraints, we were unable to arrange further workshops this year, despite keen interest from a number of students who missed out.
The UNMDG Project will be working with the School of Medicine [www.som.uq.edu.au] to try to offer the Workshop to all MBBS 1 students, prior to their end-of-year clinical Elective, for future years.
