Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Prize

Recommending Authority: Head School of Medicine.
Eligibility: Year 4 MBBS students.
Basis for Award: Best overall performance in the anaesthetic component of the critical care course examination.
Nature of Prize: Certificate and $500 book voucher.
Background: Established in 1998 and maintained by an annual gift from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, to foster undergraduate teaching of anaesthesia, its related disciplines and perioperative medicine.

Australian Medical Association Memorial Prize

Recommending Authority: Head, School of Medicine.
Eligibility: Year 4 MBBS students.
Basis for Award: Highest GPA in years 3 and 4 of the program.
Nature of Prize: $1,000, a medallion and a book.
Background: Established in 2002 and maintained by the Queensland branch of the Australian Medical Association. Since 1961 the prize has been awarded as a school-based prize by the School of Medicine.

Dr Carmello (Charlie) Salanitri Memorial Award for Achievement in Family Medicine

Recommending Authority: Head, School of Medicine.
Eligibility: Year 4 MBBS students.
Basis for Award: Awarded to the student who has shown the most promise in the area of family medicine with regards to academic performance, humanitarian and personal achievement and attributes.
Nature of Prize: $500.
Background: Established in 2008 and maintained by an annual gift by Dr Stacy Smith MD, in memory of a close family friend, Dr Charlie Salanitri, who was a family practitioner in New Farm for many years and who passed away in 2007.

Dr Elaine Katte Prize in Medicine

Recommending Authority: Head, School of Medicine.
Eligibility: Year 4 MBBS students who have not repeated a year of the program.
Basis for Award: Highest overall marks for the four years of the program.
Nature of Prize: $2000 and an academic achievement certificate.
Other Relevant Provisions: If two or more students achieve the same overall marks, the prize will be awarded to the student who most actively participated in students’ activities.
Background: Established in 2006 and maintained by an annual gift from Dr Elaine Katte.

Dr Magdalene Brodie Memorial Prize

Recommending Authority: Head, School of Medicine.
Eligibility: Year 4 MBBS students.
Basis for Award: The student who submits the best essay on the "Childhood Obesity: causes, consequences and choices?" (2010 essay topic)
Nature of Prize: A medical textbook or books (a value of $100 was awarded in 2009).
Application Due Date: Last working day in October 2010.
Background: Founded in 1969 by a gift from Mr E. Brodie to perpetuate the memory of his wife, Magdalene Brodie, MD Pecs MBBS, formerly Assistant Professor of Children's Diseases at Pazmany University, Budapest, who subsequently came to Queensland and after graduation here was engaged in general practice, particularly in relation to children's diseases.

Elsie Butler Wilkinson Memorial Prize in Child Health

Recommending Authority: Head, School of Medicine.
Eligibility: Fourth year MBBS students.
Basis for Award: Highest mark in the paediatrics rotation.
Nature of Prize: Money (approximately $500 was awarded in 2009).
Background: Established in 1963 by a bequest, of approximately $4000, under the will of Professor Herbert John Wilkinson, Professor of Anatomy in the University of Queensland 1936 to 1959, in memory of his wife.

Elsie Butler Wilkinson Memorial Prize in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Recommending Authority: Head, School of Medicine.
Eligibility: Year 4 MBBS students.
Basis for Award: Highest mark in the obstetrics and gynaecology rotation.
Nature of Prize: Money (approximately $1,000 was awarded in 2009).
Background:

Established in 1963 by a bequest of under the will of Professor Herbert John Wilkinson, a Professor of Anatomy in the University of Queensland 1936 to 1959, in memory of his wife.

Eric W Peet Memorial Prize

Recommending Authority:

Head, School of Medicine

Eligibility:Year 4 MBBS Students.
Basis for Award:

Awarded to the student who submits the best essay on any ethics topic in medicine, with a focus on their experience of the importance of ethical principles and professional virtues.

Nature of Prize:$250

 

Background:

 

The Eric W Peet Memorial Prize in Medical Ethics was established in 2010 with a donation by Dr Benjamin & Mrs Tamara Cohney in Honour of Dr Cohney's illustrious mentor Eric W Peet F.R.C.S who trained both in ENT and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. During World War 2 he servied in India and Burma as Colonel-in-Charge of the Maxillo-Facial Surgery with the 14th Army.

Harold Plant Memorial Prize

Recommending Authority: Head, School of Medicine, after consulting the President, or nominee, University of Queensland Medical Society.
Eligibility: Australian citizens completing the MBBS program.
Basis for Award: Most worthy on the basis of:
(a) scholastic attainments, judged by the results of all examinations and other work during the program; and
(b) a high standard of character and service in student activities; and
(c) fondness for and success in sport.
Nature of Prize: Money for the purchase of books (a value of approximately $220 was awarded in 2009).
Background: Founded in 1941 by the Queensland Branch of the British Medical Association with the aid of a gift of $400 in 1918 (and accrued income thereon) made by Colonel C.F. Plant as a memorial to his son, the late Harold Plant.

John F. Dunkley Memorial Prize

Recommending Authority: Head, School of Medicine.
Eligibility: Year 4 MBBS students.
Basis for Award: Best results in the progressive summative assessment in the obstetrics and gynaecology and neonatology rotation in the final year of the program.
Nature of Prize: Money (approximately $180 was awarded in 2009).
Background: Established in 1979 by a gift from Dr John F. Dunkley.

John Rendle-Short Prize in Child Health

Recommending Authority: Head, School of Medicine.
Eligibility: Final year MBBS students.
Basis for Award: Best result in the progressive summative assessment in the Paediatrics rotation in the final year of the program.
Nature of Prize: A medallion.
Background: Established in 1984 to commemorate Professor Rendle-Short's contribution to the University as foundation Professor of Child Health and maintained by the income of a fund subscribed by his former colleagues, students and friends.

Karl Kessler Memorial Prize

Recommending Authority: The bursary is awarded annually by Senate on the recommendation of a committee.
Eligibility: Year 4 MBBS students who complete the end of year elective in the field of infectious disease.
Basis for Award: The bursary is awarded to the student who, in the opinion of the committee, submits the best essay outlining the work undertaken during the elective that relates to the field of infectious disease. The essay will be reproduced in the annual UQMS magazine.
Nature of Prize: The value of the bursary is $500.
Application Due Date: Last working day of November.
Background: Established in 1992 in memory of Karl Kessler, a medical student of the University who passed away in 1989 while in his final year of study. Maintained by the income from a fund contributed by his friends.

Lilian Cooper Prize

Recommending Authority: Head, School of Medicine.
Eligibility: Year 4 MBBS students.
Basis for Award: Highest overall achievement in the four years of the MBBS program.
Nature of Prize: A prize determined by the Queensland Medical Women's Society of at least $100 in value.
Other Relevant Provisions: The prize will be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Qld Branch of the Australian Medical Association.
Background: Established in 1991 and maintained by an annual gift from the Queensland Medical Women's Society in memory of Lilian Cooper, the first woman registered as a medical practitioner in Queensland.

Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Women's Health Prize

Recommending Authority: Head, School of Medicine.
Eligibility: Year 4 MBBS students.
Basis for Award: Highest mark in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology rotation. The prize may not be awarded to a student who has received any other prize for the obstetrics and gynaecology rotation.
Nature of Prize: $500.
Background: Established in 2005 by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and maintained by an annual donation.

Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists Prize

Recommending Authority: Head, School of Medicine.
Eligibility: Year 4 MBBS students.
Basis for Award: Highest mark in the ophthalmology question in the final year written examination.
Nature of Prize: $300.
Background: Founded in 1966 and maintained by an annual gift of the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists.

Rural Doctors Association of Queensland Prize

Recommending Authority: Head, School of Medicine on the advice of a committee.
Eligibility: Students who are:
(a) domestic students as defined in the Fee Rules; and
(b) enrolled in Year 4 of the MBBS program; and
(c) members of the student rural support club, Towards Rural and Outback Health Professionals in Queensland (TROHPIQ).
Basis for Award: Most outstanding applicant based on:
(a) a personal statement, less than 500 words, demonstrating interest in a career in rural medicine; and
(b) evidence of the student’s participation in activities of TROHPIQ.
Nature of Prize: $250 and one honorary subscription to the Rural Doctors Association of Queensland Annual Conference, at which a commemorative plaque will be presented.
Application Due Date: Before 20th April.
Background: This prize was established in 1994 and maintained by an annual gift from the Rural Doctors Association of Queensland.

William Nathaniel Robertson Medal

Recommending Authority: Head, School of Medicine.
Eligibility: Year 4 MBBS students.
Basis for Award: Highest mark in the Year 4 MSAT.
Nature of Prize: Money (approximately $190 was awarded in 2009).
Background: Founded in 1937 by a gift from the Queensland Branch of the British Medical Association in recognition of the valuable services rendered to the medical profession by Dr W.N. Robertson, Vice-Chancellor of the University 1926-1938 and augmented in 1979 by a gift from his daughter Clara Joan Roe.
