Operations and Partnerships at the Medical School
The School of Medicine is a diverse enterprise operating over multiple sites with Queensland Health and private health service providers as major partners. The School has major sites all around Brisbane, in Brunei and North America, as well as several rural and remote facilities throughout Queensland.
The School has an annual budget of $100 million. It is a substantial operation and as such requires a diverse group of senior professional staff to manage its activities. Geographically the School is organised around 10 Clinical Schools, each led by a senior academic clinician.
These Clinical Schools are:
Brunei Clinical School
Greenslopes Clinical School
Ipswich Clinical School
Mater Clinical School
Northside Clinical School
Ochsner Clinical School
PA-Southside Clinical School
Royal Brisbane Clinical School
Rural Clinical School
Sunshine Coast Clinical School
Further Clinical Schools are planned as our student numbers increase, especially with our international partners, but each will be established using the same criteria of teaching and clinical excellence.
In addition to the Clinical School at Ipswich, the School has established a MBBS Ipswich Program based at the UQ’s Ipswich Campus with a current intake of 50 medical students, which will rise over time.
With the development of Clinical Schools, the 12 Academic Disciplines have an over-arching role in promoting and supporting teaching and research in the various sites/hospitals.

Our Students
The School of Medicine has nearly 1,700 Medical students currently enrolled in its Bachelor Surgery/Bachelor Medicine (MBBS) degree program and 340 students currently enrolled in its Research and Higher degree programs.
Our students are encouraged to do clinical placements around the world in their 1st and 4th Year MBBS Elective. Over 40% of enrolled medical students visited overseas hospitals and universities as part of their medical training, spending a minimum of four weeks on placement.
The School of Medicine continues to develop partnerships and supports global health projects throughout the world to ensure our students receive a truly global medical education.
The School has a strong relationship with The University of Queensland Medical Society (UQMS). UQMS is an independent, not for profit organization which aims to serve the need of medical students and ensure they graduate from The University of Queensland with more than just a degree through a range of community activities and advocacy.
Our Staff
The School has over 450 paid staff and more than 2500 honorary staff who provide a major contribution to its teaching and research activities. Absolutely fundamental to the School’s mission is the role of Academic Title Holders who are mainly, but not exclusively, doctors working in Queensland Health facilities, in private hospitals and in general practice.
Our Alumni Network
The School of Medicine Alumni Network seeks to foster a stronger relationship between our Alumni Network members and the School. It provides a variety of opportunities for our members to actively engage with the School of Medicine and The University of Queensland.
More than 10,000 alumni have graduated from the School of Medicine since 1940. Nearly 6,500 of the School’s Alumni Network members reside within Queensland. There are sizable groups located in New South Wales and Victoria, with smaller groups located around most other Australian cities. Globally, the School of Medicine Alumni Network has members in Malaysia, the United States, UK, and Canada, to name a few.
